The CDC recorded 2,065,905 marriages in the United States in 2022, the most recent finalized year. The marriage rate of 6.2 per 1,000 population was the highest since 2018, signaling a post-pandemic rebound.18

WeddingWire 2025 cost data pegs the national average wedding planner fee at about $1,850, with day-of coordinators starting around $800 and full-service planners ranging from $2,300 to $6,000. Hourly rates start near $75 and climb to $275 for higher-end pros.22

CNBC Select 50-state breakdown for 2025 shows New Jersey as the most expensive state for a hometown wedding at $54,400, while Alaska comes in cheapest at $16,150. Destination weddings averaged $41,000, well above the $32,000 hometown national mean.23

IBISWorld measured the US Wedding Services industry at $70.3 billion in market size, with continued growth projected through 2025 as venue, catering and planning revenue rebound. It remains one of the larger discretionary-services categories in the country.24
25. One in five vendors raised prices because of tariffs
CNN Business reported in late 2025 that one in five wedding vendors raised prices specifically because of new tariffs on imported florals, attire and decor, while 33 percent of engaged couples named price increases their top planning worry. 83 percent of vendors reported higher operational costs overall.25

A Washington Post analysis showed wedding budgets grew roughly 30 percent from 2019 to 2024 for comparable venues and guest counts, pushing more couples toward elopements and micro-weddings under 50 guests. Food, flowers, photo and cake were all up about 20 percent over four years.26
27. One in four 40-year-olds in America has never married
Pew Research found that one in four Americans aged 40 have never been married, up from one in five in 2010. Among those still unmarried, 78 percent of Gen Z and 73 percent of Millennials say they still hope to wed, but later and more cautiously.27
When couples ask me how much their wedding should cost, I always answer the same way. The amount matters less than the order in which you spend it. The most memorable receptions I have ever attended were rarely the most expensive. They were the ones where the couple decided early what mattered most to them, and stayed relaxed about everything else. A small ceremony in your parents backyard can land harder than a 200-guest ballroom, so do not let averages stress you out. They are a reference point, not a yardstick for your relationship.
If you do want to save, save where the money lives. Each guest costs around $292 in this country, so cutting 20 names off the list quickly saves you $5,800 without anyone noticing. Date matters too. A Friday in February is almost always cheaper than a Saturday in October. For the venue and catering, which absorb close to half the total budget, the deepest savings come from a venue that includes catering in a single contract, or a non-traditional space like a brewery or restaurant buyout. On the dress, secondhand and rental options have caught up with retail in quality. The one line I would never cut is photo and video. At the end of the day, that is the only thing that stays with you.
